Over the last few decades we have seen a huge shift in the way we as humans eat. This shift has been both negative and positive. While we saw an incredible increase in highly processed foods in the last century, in more recent years we have also seen veganism finally go mainstream after many celebrities and public figures have raved about the benefits of this diet for their health. Public opinion is also slowly starting to shift regarding adopting a completely vegan lifestyle by eliminating all animal products from our lives. Although some adjustments are required in the adoption of a vegan lifestyle, it is all worth it in the end when we look at the impact that animal products has on the environment, our health and the animals they come from.
For Animal Welfare
Although many people choose to eat animal products or wear leather and fur, few actually know where their food comes from, how it is produced and how their clothes are made. It is safe to assume that most people think that fur is cultivated painlessly by simply shaving the animals. Not many people would imagine that some animals are skinned alive and are killed for their fur.
By choosing to buy vegan products, we are refusing to allow these things to happen to innocent animals, and we are also showing businesses that we are no longer interested in purchasing their products. Every business is built to make profit, when public demand for a product decreases, businesses will have to change their ways to keep their profit, or face bankruptcy. A change in the clothing industry can begin with you saying “No thanks” to animal products.
For the Sake of the Environment
It is unknown to many people who don’t live a vegan lifestyle but still want to save the planet, that the simple raising of livestock destroys much more of the environment than the average person could ever conceive. Raising animals for food and for the aid in the creation of some of today’s top beauty trends costs billions of liters of fresh water, thousands of kilometers of agricultural land, and tons and tons of factories and machines that release an incredible amount of greenhouse gas. If we all come together to cut out even a few animal products in our day to day life, we will actually be making a huge positive impact on the planet.
Veganism Fuels Change
While changing the way we eat is definitely getting attention in the food industry, changing the way we dress has made an even bigger impact. Larger clothing brands are getting the hint that people don’t want to wear something that was taken off of an animal anymore. A great example of the way veganism has changed a whole trade is if we take a look at the beauty industry. Only a few short years ago people were still willing to buy makeup tested on animals. Ever since people took a stand and stopped buying these products, the largest of makeup companies around the world ended their animal testing labs and began creating only vegan products.
Adopting a vegan lifestyle is something we can all do one step at a time. By slowly decreasing our use and purchase of animal products we are sending out a message to the companies that manufacture them. Although it may take some time for large industries to adapt, with enough people willing to change their lifestyle the shift will be possible. By being considerate to how we eat and choosing to buy vegan products, we are slowly changing our planet for the better.
